2023 LIVE BEES

The 2022 season has come to an end and beekeepers are starting to prepare for the 2023. This is when you evaluate what beekeeping equipment you may need for next year and the bees you may need. You might be a new beekeeper looking to get started or you know what you’re doing and looking to expand your current beeyard. In this blog we will explain the different types of live bee products we will carry for 2023 and the different benefits of each product

Live Bee Package - 3lb

Our live bee packages will be coming from New Zealand from an experienced producer. Bees are selected at the end of the honey flow, from the end of February until the middle of April. They are then packaged and are ready for transport. During transit bees are monitored for temperature, humidity and CO2 levels.  Real time monitoring allows us to prevent excess heating of the packages, the main cause of transportation damage.

You can expect these packages to be delivered at the end of April, beginning of May. Each package contains 2.5lbs of bees which is approximately 7000 bees, with a caged queen. We will be delivering these for both BC and Alberta.

This is perfect for experienced beekeepers who already have used equipment with a drawn out comb. If you’re looking to expand your yard or to replenish your losses from overwintering. Live bee packages do require a little bit more care as they will need syrup and patties to make sure the colony can focus on rearing brood once they are placed into their new home.

5 - Frame Nucs

The 5 Frame Nucs are a great for anyone starting out or if they need a quick start up in the spring. This product comes with frames of drawn out comb full of honey, pollen and brood in various stages. (eggs, larvae and capped brood) A mated queen is supplied with the nuc as well.

This product is what is usually called a split. Made in the early spring once there’s enough population and capped brood inside the hive. After splitting the beekeeper will tend to the nuc to make sure the colony is able to survive. Due to this, the product is usually available for pick up mid to late May.

10 - Frame Starter Hive

We highly recommend this product to all new beekeepers. A ready to go hive that you can place on your property right away without needing to move the bees. Comes with one brood box, bottom board, entrance reducer, telescoping lid and 10 frames.  The ten frames include a mated queen, brood in various stages, honey and pollen.

As our beekeepers do most of the work to get the colony established the pick up time frame is early to mid June.

A selection of all of our live bee products get inspected by the Alberta Apiculturist office before they are distributed to our customers. We also provide our live bee guarantee which is something unique to Hiveworld. This way you are able to safely shop and know that we got your back. For more information on our Live Bee Guarantee click HERE

This year we are also including a new feature for ordering our live bees, which is the pre register waitlist option. If you’re not wanting to pay for the bees right away, you can place your name down on our waitlist for any of our live bee products. Once the product is available for distribution we will contact you to arrange a pick up. Please note that this option is on a first come first serve and the customers who paid will take priority.

We look forward to seeing you for the 2023 beekeeping season.

As your bees prepare for the main flow they are building their population and the queen is heading toward her maximum laying capacity of approximately 1,500 eggs per day. In Alberta, we see a huge population explosion unlike anywhere else in the world. Your hive can have 80,000 bees!

Are Varroa Mites a Problem?
Are Varroa Mites a Problem?

March 10, 2023

Varroa mites are the most deadly pest affecting western bees and can kill bee colonies in short periods of time. Monitoring and testing throughout the spring and summer is essential to keeping your hive healthy. If varroa mites are not properly treated throughout the beekeeping season, it can destroy an entire colony.
